Solutions

A Solution is a named container that groups multiple pipeline graph files together. Instead of opening each .json graph individually, you open one .succsln file and all your related graphs are organised in a panel — ready to switch between with a click.

Searching a Solution

Press Shift twice quickly, or choose Solution → Search Solution, to find files and text in nodes across the solution. Search matches file names and paths, node labels and aliases, parameter values, expressions, and scripts. Use the arrow keys and Enter to open a file or jump to a node.

The search scans the solution folder and listed graphs, including graphs outside the folder. It includes live edits in the current graph and saved contents in other graphs. See Keyboard Shortcuts for details.

What is a Solution?

A solution file (.succsln) stores:

  • A name for the project or workspace
  • A list of pipeline graphs that belong to it, stored as paths relative to the solution file

When you open a solution, Project Succession resolves every relative path to the actual graph files on disk and displays them in the Solution Panel in the left sidebar.

Key benefits:

  • Organise related graphs — group an ingestion graph, a processing graph, and a delivery graph under one solution
  • Switch graphs instantly — click any graph in the panel to open it in the editor
  • Multi-tab editing — keep several graphs open simultaneously in the tab bar
  • Portable projects — because paths are stored relative to the solution file, moving the whole folder to a different machine or directory keeps everything connected

Creating a Solution

  1. Open the main menu (☰ top-left)
  2. Go to File → New Solution
  3. A file-save dialog opens — choose a location and give the file a name (the .succsln extension is added automatically)
  4. An empty solution is created and the Solution Panel appears in the left sidebar

The new solution starts with no graphs. You add them manually after creation.

Opening an Existing Solution

  1. Open the main menu (☰ top-left)
  2. Go to File → Open Solution
  3. A file-open dialog opens — navigate to and select a .succsln file
  4. The solution loads and its graphs appear in the Solution Panel

If a solution is already open it is replaced by the newly opened one, and any open tabs are cleared.

The Solution Panel

The Solution Panel is located in the left sidebar. It becomes active whenever a solution is open.

When no solution is open

The panel displays:

No solution open. Use File → New Solution or Open Solution.

When a solution is open

The panel shows:

  • Solution name at the top (hover to see the full file path)
  • Add current button — adds the graph currently open in the editor to the solution
  • Graph list — all graphs that belong to the solution

Adding a Graph to a Solution

  1. Open or create a graph and save it (a graph must have a file path before it can be added)
  2. In the Solution Panel header, click Add current
  3. The graph appears in the list

Note: Each graph can only appear once. Clicking Add current a second time for the same graph is a no-op.

Tip: Save the graph file in the same folder as the .succsln file (or a subfolder) so the stored path stays relative and the solution remains portable.

Removing a Graph from a Solution

  1. Find the graph in the Solution Panel list
  2. Click the − (minus) icon on the right side of the graph entry
  3. The graph is removed from the solution

Removing a graph from a solution does not delete the .json file from disk — it only unlinks it from the .succsln file.

Opening a Graph from the Solution Panel

Click any graph entry in the Solution Panel list.

  • The graph loads in the editor (or switches to it if already open in a tab)
  • The active graph is highlighted in the panel list
  • A new tab appears in the tab bar at the top of the work area

Multi-Tab Editing

When you open graphs from the Solution Panel, each graph opens in its own tab above the work area.

Tab bar

The tab bar appears at the top of the work area as soon as at least one graph is open via the solution. Each tab shows:

  • The graph’s name (derived from the file name)
  • A × close button

Switching tabs

Click any tab to switch to that graph. The work area and the highlighted entry in the Solution Panel both update.

Closing a tab

Click × on a tab to close it. If you close the active tab, focus moves to the most recently used remaining tab. Closing a tab does not save or discard unsaved changes — save before closing if needed.

Solution File Format

A .succsln file is plain JSON:

{
  "name": "My Pipeline Project",
  "graphs": [
    "./ingestion.json",
    "./processing.json",
    "./delivery.json"
  ]
}
FieldTypeDescription
namestringHuman-readable name shown in the Solution Panel
graphsstring[]Paths to pipeline files, stored relative to the .succsln file

Path resolution

  • Paths are stored relative to the solution file (e.g. ./subdir/graph.json)
  • On Windows, if a graph lives on a different drive from the solution, the absolute path is stored as a fallback
  • Forward slashes are used as the separator regardless of platform, ensuring cross-platform compatibility

Atomic writes

Solution files are written atomically (written to a .tmp file first, then renamed) to prevent corruption if the application is closed mid-write.

Workflow Tips

Keep everything in one folder

my-project/
  my-project.succsln
  ingestion.json
  processing.json
  delivery.json

This keeps all paths short and relative, and the whole folder can be moved or shared without breaking the solution.

Use the solution as your project file

Open the .succsln file instead of individual graphs. The solution gives you the full picture of the project at a glance and lets you navigate between graphs without the file-open dialog.

Deploy graphs independently

A solution is an editing aid — it does not affect graph deployment. Each graph in the solution can be deployed separately via the Deployment Dashboard or CLI regardless of whether the solution is open.

Troubleshooting

”Save the graph first before adding it to a solution”

The graph has no file path yet. Use File → Save Pipeline to save it to disk, then click Add current again.

A graph appears in the list but won’t open

The underlying .json file has been moved, renamed, or deleted. Remove it from the solution and re-add it from its new location.

Solution panel is not visible

The Solution Panel only appears when a solution is open. Use File → New Solution or File → Open Solution to load one.

Moving a project to another machine

Move the entire folder (solution file + all graph .json files) together. As long as the relative folder structure is preserved, the solution will work on any machine.
